First Layer Test – Five Zone
Get a better first layer with this simple and effective Five Zone Calibration Test!
This test is designed to help you check first-layer consistency across five important areas of your 3D printer's build plate: the four corners and the center.
By comparing the printed areas, you can quickly identify uneven first-layer extrusion, adhesion problems, and potential bed leveling or Z-offset issues.
Features
- Five test zones: four corners and one center
- Quick and easy to print
- Low filament consumption
- No supports required
- Easy visual inspection
- Suitable for FDM 3D printers
Recommended Print Settings
- Nozzle: 0.4 mm
- Layer height: 0.20 mm
- Supports: Off
- Raft: Off
- Material: PLA or PETG
- First-layer speed: 20–30 mm/s
How to Read the Results
Perfect First Layer: Smooth, consistent surfaces with connected extrusion lines.
Gaps Between Lines: May indicate insufficient first-layer squish or under-extrusion.
Rough or Raised Surfaces: May indicate excessive first-layer squish or over-extrusion.
Poor Adhesion: Check bed cleanliness, temperature, Z-offset and filament settings.
Compare all five zones to identify differences across your build plate.
Why Use This Test?
A consistent first layer is the foundation of a successful 3D print. This simple calibration model helps you identify potential problems before starting larger, more time-consuming prints.
